What did people use for skin care before the introduction of man-made chemicals? Currently, there are virtually no mass produced skin care products available that are made with animal fats. Interestingly, they disappeared at the same time that animal fats in our diets did. Among the animal fats used for skin care, it appeared that the one used most overwhelmingly was indeed tallow. Tallow was usually mixed with various other substances directly from nature to form a spreadable skin balm. Further research shows that modern science supports this traditional use of tallow as a principal ingredient of skin care recipes.
No plant-based skin care ingredient or product can remotely compare to tallow in its power to nourish and heal the skin.
From biology, we know that the cell membrane is made up primarily of fatty acids, a double layer, to be exact. Saturated fats constitute at least 50 percent of the cell membrane. As Sally Fallon Morell explains in her book Nourishing Traditions, since saturated fats tend to be more solid than unsaturated fats at a given temperature, they help give the cell membrane its necessary stiffness and integrity for proper function.
Another strong indication of tallow’s compatibility with our skin biology is its similarity to sebum, the oily, waxy matter that lubricates and waterproofs our skin. Indeed, the word “sebum” actually means “tallow” in Latin and began to be used in this biological sense around the year 1700. William D. James MD explains that the sebaceous glands, which secrete sebum, are found in greatest abundance on the face and scalp, but they are distributed over all of our skin except on the palms and soles.
Tallow is compatible with our skin biology and is readily absorbed by the skin.
In regard to the compatibility of tallow with the biology of our skin, we should note that we are animals rather than plants, so the modern taboo against animal products in skin care products would seem unfounded and even illogical. In addition to containing very little saturated fats, plant products do not have the same levels of other nutrients needed for healthy skin. Tallow contains the abundant natural fat-soluble activators, vitamins A, D, and K, as well as vitamin E, which are found only in animal fats and which are all necessary for general health and for skin health.
It is a wise precaution not to apply substances to our skin that we would not eat.
We know that the skin is the largest organ of the body and readily absorbs much of what is applied to it, good and bad. That is why so many drugs can be administered through the use of transdermal patches. Therefore, it is an excellent principle and wise precaution not to apply substances to our skin that we would not readily take internally or, in a word, eat. It would be ideal if what we used on our skin were edible, and yet more, a whole food, in which case it would also have the potential of actually nourishing the skin and helping it to heal itself.
2022 News update:
CNN and other media have flagged a recent study published by the Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) finding that 129 of some 271 skin brightening products it tested contain high levels of mercury. This is raising alarm over the safety of skin brightening products, especially considering the products of concern are sold globally through e-commerce platforms such as eBay, Amazon and Alibaba.
Most of the products sampled were manufactured in Asia, especially in Pakistan (43%), Thailand (8%), China (6%) and Taiwan (4%), according to their packaging.
ZMWG is a coalition of more than 110 public interest environmental and health non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It was formed in 2005 by the European Environmental Bureau and the Mercury Policy Project. ZMWG published the study on the European Environmental Bureau's (EEB's) website. Cosmetics & Toiletries sought additional references but according to one spokesperson, the study has not yet been submitted for peer review.
Between 2017 and 2022, ZMWG reports it conducted three separate investigations, each time "confirming continued global access to illegal, high mercury skin lightening products." The group noted most of the products sampled were manufactured in Asia, especially in Pakistan (43%), Thailand (8%), China (6%) and Taiwan (4%), according to their packaging.
According to the study, the products were tested in an accredited laboratory in the EU, after being screened using x-ray fluorescence in three regional hubs: CASE in Côte d’Ivoire (for Africa), Ban Toxics in the Philippines (for Asia) and in Antigua and Barbuda (for Latin America and the Caribbean). Forty-seven percent of the products tested reportedly contained more than the permitted level of mercury. Some contained > 10,000 ppm; others were > 50,000 ppm. CNN noted that in 2013, the Minamata convention set an international limit for cosmetics of 1 mg/kg of mercury, or 1 part per million (ppm) (excluding eye area cosmetics), which came into force in 2021.
In relation, in November 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also flagged skin care products for mercury content. It stated, "In the past few years, FDA and state health officials have discovered numerous products that contain mercury, and there have been cases in which people exposed to such products have had mercury poisoning or elevated levels of mercury in their bodies."
The agency continued, "[The] FDA has an import alert in place that lets our field staff know that the agency has enough evidence or other information to refuse admission of shipments of mercury-containing skin products. But this is only a partial solution. Many of these products are coming into the country through illegal channels. That’s why it’s so important for consumers and sellers to know about the dangers of possible mercury poisoning associated with the use of these skin products."
We will continue to keep you informed with links and articles so you can decide what's best for you and your family.
Here's some food for thought.
As Sally Fallon Morell explains in the Oiling of America, “natural” products also contain certain vegetable oils that could be harmful: polyunsaturated oils like safflower, sunflower, cottonseed, corn, soy, and canola. High heat is generally used in the production of these oils. Polyunsaturated oils are unstable, fragile, and susceptible to rancidity when subjected to heat, which causes the production of free radicals, associated with cell damage, aging, and disease. Certainly, we do not want to be applying products high in free radicals to our skin, causing the very types of problems we are trying to relieve or prevent. And polyunsaturates would not seem to be conducive to skin health, extrapolating from the fact that the modern excess consumption of these types of oils leads to a host of health problems.
Not long after the birth of our daughter, I was inspired to find clean products to take care of her. Through many searches and inspiring pioneers in the field, one who inspired me to dive deep into clean skincare was Bumblebee Apothecary. This mom was both inspiring and helpful in my journey. Parents are who children look up to and learn from. Keep learning and keep inspiring.
Believe it or not, grass fed tallow has its very own antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. This is great for anyone dealing with skin conditions, such as acne. It’s also wonderful when tallow is used as a base in different salves and skin healing products. Grass fed tallow helps soften scar tissue and aids in balancing skins natural oils. Grass fed tallow is rich in minerals, which is wonderful for skin health.
Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself for better skin health!
Tallow is uniquely biocompatible with the way our skin cells are made. Tallow is deeply moisturizing and helps to prevent the skin’s loss of moisture.
Grass fed tallow contains palmitic acid, which improves the barrier function of the skin. It also contains stearic acid, which helps to repair damaged skin. Stearic acid also helps to improve skin’s flexibility and suppleness.
Omega 9 fatty acid, also known as oleic acid, is also found in grass fed tallow. This helps the other nutrients penetrate deeply into the skin, so that the skin can use and benefit from all of the nutrients.
Tallow from cattle fed and finished only on grass, contains the highest amount of beneficial nutrients.
Omega 7 fatty acids are also in grass fed tallow. These fatty acids are some of our skin’s basic building blocks, and they also help in making skin appear more youthful and healthy. Grass fed tallow contains the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12. This particular combination of vitamins is found only in animal products.
